Engraving Plastic
Engraver's Plastic
Engraver's plastic sheet stock is made from a colored base material with a thin layer of a second color laminated to the top.
The laser will engrave away the thin, top layer and reveal the base color underneath it. In addition, the laser can cut the sheet to produce shapes for badges, signs, tabs and dozens of applications.
These types of plastic sheet have been under development for many years and the product available today gives excellent results.
Tips For Engraving Plastic
Do not use too much power to engrave. Adjust the power until you see a haze of the top color then raise the power setting by 5%.
Remove any smoke residue with acrylic cleaning solutions.
Mask the top side with transfer tape before cutting to eliminate smoke residue on the engraving.
Remove the clear masking supplied from the factory before engraving.
Some color combinations engrave best when 2 light passes are made instead of one high power pass.
Use a 2 or 2.5" lens.
Clean the motion system and optics after engraving or cutting. The smoke residue from this material can be caustic to bearings and optics.
Other Tips
Add a foil or sign vinyl to the top of the plastic to create 3 colors. Vector cut these materials before engraving to add extra color to your products.
