Engraving glass
The Xenetech laser is not capable of engraving deep into glass but we can use it to create a frosted effect. As the machine lasers the glass, it heats the surface and causes it to microscopically chip away creating the frosted look. Since each glass manufacturer uses a different type of glass, the results of this process are often difficult to predict.
The best results for laser engraving glass are seen by dampening the heat generated by the laser using one or several of the following techniques.
Apply transfer tape to the glass and spray it with water to dampen it before engraving.
Reduce the power and speed of engraving equally. A longer engraving time is not optimum but it will reduce the heat buildup and lessen cracking.
Coat the glass with a 50/50 mixture of dish soap and water. Let the solution dry before engraving.
Apply dampened strips of newspaper to the glass before engraving. Engrave the glass while the strips are still wet.
Since each glass manufacturer uses a different type of glass, it is always a good idea to have a few spare pieces to practice on before lasering the actual product.
