Engraving Acrylic
Engraving Acrylic
The best type of acrylic for engraving is cast acrylic. Cast acrylic turns a frosty white when laser engraved.
The factory mask should first be removed before engraving. The brown, factory mask contains paraffin which leaves a residue behind if you try to engrave through it and into the acrylic.
For light surface engraving, do not use any mask on the acrylic. For deeper engraving that will be paint filled, use a transfer tape or Mylar mask.
Laser Engraving the Acrylic
Start by placing the acrylic piece on the engraving table. For light surface engraving, focus on the top of the acrylic piece. Then focus into the acrylic by .020". (i.e. raise the table by .020" or one revolution of the hand crank) This will increase the diameter of the laser spot size slightly and create smoother engraving.
For deeper engraving that will be paint filled, apply the mask first. Next place the piece on the engraving table and focus on the top. Engrave as normal to the desired depth.
Other Tips
After engraving, remove the smoke residue with a soft cloth and acrylic cleaner such as the Novus 1 cleaner. For heavy residue or deep scratches use Novus 2 polish.
